Stephen Saunders

stevenManaging Director of ASA Productions (UK)
Film and TV Producer/Director.

I started in the film industry some 45 years ago at the Shell Film Unit where I trained and developed my skills in post-production. Upon leaving and starting as a freelancer I worked in the cutting rooms on some major films, one being James Bond ‘Live and Let Die’.  I then continued to work with some highly respected film directors – Richard Marquand known for Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983), Jagged Edge (1985) and Eye of the Needle (1985).

Following on from this I started within the television industry working as an editor at London Weekend Television and Thames Television, as well as working as a freelancer for the BBC. I edited many documentaries for Channel 4 when it was first launched. During my freelance period I have edited numerous dramas and comedy series for the BBC, including ‘A Different Drummer’ and the TV comedy ‘Sykes’ starring the writer comedian Eric Sykes.  At HTV I worked on a feature length drama – ‘The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb’, and TV series ‘Return to Treasure Island’ starring Brain Blessed.

Follow my successes in post-production I started my own editing facility editing for most of the major TV companies.

While running ASA my directing skills have won me numerous awards. In 2011 I won a gold award at the World Media Fest in Hamburg for an educational programme ‘Art & Design’ produced for BBC learning. That same year my programme ‘Lancaster at War’ for the History Channel won silver at the same venue. I have was nominated for a BAFTA for an educational series for Channel 4 entitled ‘Energy From Nature’ – a three part series giving an insight to a young audience of how nature can supply us with power from natural resources.

During my extensive career in the industry I have gained substantial knowledge and experience, and I have seen many changes. I have adapted to the new technologies, tailoring my company’s programmes to the new and challenging audiences of today.

I lecture at two major media universities, Ravensbourne College in London and Staffordshire University, where I lecture on production content, production techniques and research, helping students to develop their story making abilities in both fictional and factual programming.

Since ASA’s first production hit the TV screens in 2005, a four part documentary series ‘Fighting The Blue’, which sold to UKTV (and is still showing today not only on UKTV, but across the rest of Europe) we have gained a significant position in the television market and have continued to flourish in that sector of the business.

At our initial outset, the main business activities were focused on television production, to produce programmes that where not only entertaining, but educational. We logically moved into DVD sales with our productions and this has proved a valuable source of income, although modest compared to some companies, we feel that the continued sales of all our programmes speaks for themself. To date our first programme ‘Fighting The Blue’ has sold over 2,000 copies, while our latest production ‘The Long March to Freedom’ is about to achieve sales of over 3,500 copies since its first showing in 2012.

At present ASA is producing two documentaries, which are in their development phase. One has been partly commissioned by the French TV channel RMC Découverte and we are in negotiations with Channel 4 to raise the budget short fall.  The second we are producing with our own money with sales guaranteed in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
