Joseph Cole – Joe/Joey has worked in the mines since he was able to work. In his early 30s he already feels old beyond his years. He spends his spare time in the Club or looking after his cousin Ernest Mills (on his mother’s side). He usually wears blue jeans, boots, a t-shirt and a black bulky jacket. On occasion he can also be seen wearing his father’s cap. He is strong minded but diverts most of his attention to Ernest.

Ernest Mills – Ernie works alongside his cousin Joe in the mines which has made him physical fit and strong. His bulk makes him appear to be a formidable character but once directly addressed it is clear that he is very young with a child’s mental state with an adult’s age of 30. Although this is common knowledge between the social group of which Ernie and Joe attend, the knowledge is hidden from most others. Ernie has been cared for by Joe’s family since his mother passed away at five. He’s fascinated with animals and has a caring heart but is more often than not, too heavy handed.

Lillian Gray – Lilly/Lil is in her early 30s and works part time serving food in the local Club to the miners in the evening. She is married to local police Chief Michael Gray. Although she loves her husband it is clear that the relationship is now strained. Lilly desperately wants a baby but Michael refuses. She has a close relationship with Joe whom she grew up with as neighbours. She is a naturally beautiful woman but encouraged to wear unnecessary accessories by Michael.

Michael Gray – Michael is a highly respected Chief in the county, with a large number of police officers at his command not only in the village but also further afield. In his later 30s/early 40s he is a hard and commanding man that only expects his way. Men and women avoid getting on his bad side for fear of the unnecessary retribution it would produce. Constantly wearing his uniform to demand respect he is a man avoided by the locals. He has little regard for his wife other than a trophy.

Norman Parish – Norman is father of the only black family in the village and has aged well in his late 40s, working in the mines, he now attends to the birds and equipment. His wife Rebecca also assists in the local club with Lillian. Norman develops a close relationship with Ernie as one of his own sons (now deceased) was born like him; also they both have an affinity with animals.

Rebecca Parish – Friends with Lillian, met through the club. Although Michael disapproves of their friendship, Lillian disobeys his orders to remain friends.

Robert Shaw – Bertie is known throughout the village for his humour and authority. He is a local in which all others seek advice. Friends with Joe since school he knows of Ernie’s situation and helps to hide this knowledge when needed.

Brian Marsh – Brian is another friend of Joe’s and colleague. Part of the social group, always has some gossip about something.

Eric Palmer – Last of the social group, a very quiet man. Eric often gives practical advice when nothing else can be thought of. He’s very good at calming Ernie when he’s in a rage.
